Summary Status: rare (Category III), it is distributed in all types of the Lake Zaisan region of eastern Kazakstan. The population structure of this species varies annually, but the average density is 10 individuals per hectare. The basic limiting factors are deep freezing of the soil, extensive grass cutting and agricultural practices affecting the quality of its habitat. This rodent is well adapted to captive breeding conditions. In order to protect this species it is necessary to reduce agricultural activities in its core habitat areas and to create the Kuludzhun nature reserve.
