|Order||Perch-like fishes (Perciformes)|
|Genus||River perches (Perca)|
|Species Authority||Kessler, 1874|
|Summary||Status: vulnerable (Category II), endemic species with rapidly decreasing populations in the Lake Balkhash and Lake Alakol Basins. Adults may reach 50 cm long and 1.5 kg in weight. The main reasons for its decline are heavily increased pressure from introduced predators (such as the European pike perch and the giant chan-nel catfish) and the deterioration of water conditions. The Balkhash perch is listed as rare in The 1994 IUCN Red List of Endangered Animals. Artificial breeding has not been done. To protect this fish, nature reserves must be established in the Bolshoi Altai Lake in the lower Baskan River.|
